Battery Storage
For the longest life of your LiFePO4 battery, it is recommended to charge your LiFePO4 Battery above 50% capacity for long-term storage. If the LiFePO4 voltage is low for long-term storage the battery management system will go into "sleep mode" to protect the battery from over-discharging. Connecting the battery to a LiFePo4 charger will "wake" the battery up.
If the battery is stored for a long time (not to exceed three months), the cells should be stored in a dry and cool place. The cellโs storage voltage should match the voltage of the pack and the cell is to be stored in a condition with a temperature of 23ยฑ2ยฐC and humidity of 45%-75%. The long-term use of unused batteries is to recharge every 3 months. Ensure that the battery voltage is within the above range.
Battery Handling
- Do not expose the battery to fire
- Do not put the battery in a charge or equipment with the wrong terminals connected
- Avoid shorting the battery
- Avoid excessive physical shock or vibration
- Do not disassemble or deform the battery
- Do not immerse in water
- Do not use the battery mixed with other different makes, types or models of batteries
- Keep out of the reach of children
Battery Charge and Discharge
- Battery must be charged in appropriate charger only
- Never use a modified or damaged charger
- Do not leave the battery in the charger for over 24 hours
Battery Disposal
To properly dispose of a lithium-ion battery it is important to understand that they contain hazardous materials that can be dangerous if not handled correctly. Depending on your location you may have access to special collection sites or programs for recycling or disposing of lithium-ion batteries. These locations take the necessary safety precautions to ensure proper disposal to protect people and the environment.
In addition, some local governments and waste management organizations also offer residential pickup services for recycling old batteries. It is important to confirm whether or not these services accept lithium-ion batteries before using them as many will only accept standard alkaline or lead acid types. You should also avoid throwing away lithium-ion batteries in your regular trash as doing so can create an environmental hazard by releasing harmful substances into the soil and groundwater.
If your area does not offer any collection programs or sites for disposing of lithium-ion batteries then you may have to find a certified recycler near you who can safely process them for reuse or recycling purposes. When searching for local recyclers it is important to make sure they are certified by an organization such as R2 Solutions which ensures responsible battery disposal practices according to industry standards. Doing research ahead of time can help you find reliable service providers who are knowledgeable about how to handle batteries in an environmentally responsible way while keeping people safe from potential hazards caused by incorrect disposal methods.
General
What is the difference between a series and a parallel connection?
Series connections use two or more batteries together to increase the voltage if your lithium-ion battery system. The positive of the single battery is connected to the negative of another battery until you reach the voltage you need.
Example: Your battery system voltage will be 24V if you connect two - 12 Volt Batteries in series.
Parallel connections use two or more batteries together to increase the capacity of the battery bank. The positive terminals are connected together and the negative terminals are connected of all the batteries until you reach your battery pack capacity goal.
Example: Your battery system capacity will be 12 Volt 200AH if you connect two - 12 Volt 100AH's in a parallel connection.
How fast will my battery be shipped from LBC?
All batteries from LBC have no shelf life. We make our batteries built to order.
Most orders are shipped the same day depending on if we carry the specific battery in stock. If the battery is not in stock you can expect to see your battery ship within 30 days. If you are ordering a custom lithium-ion battery the shipping timeframe will be between three to six weeks after the custom design process is completed.
Can I use an alternator from a vehicle for my LiFePO4 Batteries?
Yes, you can to some extent. LiFePo4 batteries are more efficiently charged if you regulate the amount of current going into the battery toward 100% full. Technically you should taper back the current so that the last 5%-10% of the charge is at a lower current flowing into the battery pack. If you are always using an alternator to charge your batteries the high current can make your battery voltage skyrocket which will disconnect the battery management system inside of the battery. We recommend that if you are using an alternator to charge your batteries, purchase a lithium-ion charger that you can top off your batteries every other month so that the battery management systems see a 100% state of charge.
What is the life of a LiFePO4 Battery?
Lithium Battery Company LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are engineered with the most powerful chemistry to provide 6000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge.
How does my BMS (Battery Management System) Work?
We use a small microcomputer inside our battery management systems that regulates the output current from the battery pack and manages the internal cell balancing. The purpose of the BMS is to protect the battery pack and individual cells from being damaged. The battery management system is an extra layer of safety protection that does not need to be managed.
Here are some of the protection features of the BMS:
1. Cell Balancing Management
2. Over-Current Protection
3. Over-Voltage Protection
4. Over-Discharge Protection
5. Temperature Protection
6. Short Circuit Protection
7. Over-Charge Protection
Are LiFePO4 Batteries Waterproof?
Our standard ABS case LiFePO4 batteries are IP54 rated, meaning they are protected against dust and smashing of water but are not dust and water tight. It is important that you store your lithium-ion batteries in a dry environment to prevent any moisture damage.
LBC Custom lithium-ion batteries can be designed up to IP67 that is 100% protected against solid objects like dust and sand, and it has been tested to work for at least 30 minutes while under 15cm to 1m of water.
Can a LiFePO4 Battery work in high temperatures?
Yes, LiFePO4 batteries are able to work in high temperatures. In fact, they are designed to be more resistant to heat than other battery types such as lead-acid and nickel-metal hydride. This is because LiFePO4 batteries use an electrolyte consisting of a lithium salt dissolved in an organic solvent, which makes them less susceptible to thermal runaway caused by high temperatures. Additionally, due to their construction materials, LiFePO4 cells have a greater tolerance for higher temperatures with a minimal decrease in performance or capacity compared to other battery types. Consequently, these batteries can have a longer working lifespan even in extremely hot conditions and are suitable for applications that require a reliable power supply regardless of temperature fluctuations.
Can a LiFePO4 Battery work in low temperatures?
Yes, a LiFePO4 battery can work in low temperatures. In fact, these batteries are often used in applications where extreme temperatures are encountered such as automotive and off-grid solar applications. LiFePO4 batteries have a wide temperature range which usually starts at -20ยฐC and up to +60ยฐC. This makes them suitable for use in cold climates and other harsh environments. Moreover, the cold temperature does not significantly affect the capacity of the battery but it does reduce its internal resistance, making it more efficient.
The main advantage of using LiFePO4 batteries in colder environments is their low self-discharge rate. This means that their charge retention capacity is higher than other types of batteries like lead acid or NiMH batteries. With proper care and maintenance, LiFePO4 batteries can retain up to 80% of their charge even after long periods of non-use in extremely cold temperatures. Therefore, they are an ideal choice for outdoor activities or projects that require frequent recharging in cold weather conditions. Furthermore, some models come with built-in temperature protection features that enable them to remain safe and effective even when exposed to very low temperatures.
Overall, LiFePO4 batteries offer optimal performance in both warm and cold climates due to their wide temperature range and good charge retention capacity at lower temperatures. They are reliable power sources for many outdoor activities like camping or fishing trips where frequent recharging may be necessary without worries about freezing conditions damaging the batteryโs cells or performance.
If you are planning on using a LiFePO4 battery in cold temperatures, colder than the above-recommended temperature we recommend contacting us about a custom battery solution. We are constantly innovating battery heat jacket solutions that automatically turn on at low temperatures to gently warm the battery prior to charging. This will extend your battery life and efficiency.
How do I charge a LiFePO4 Battery?
Lithium Ion Batteries should be charged with a charger that has a lithium charging profile installed. Using an AGM or Lead-Acid Charger will not efficiently charge lithium-ion batteries. They use a forced charging method that does not lower the current toward the end of the charge. This will make the voltage of the lithium-ion battery skyrocket and enable the battery management system to disconnect from the charger. LiFePO4 batteries should be charged with a CC+CV to achieve a 100% state of charge. Most charging companies have The Lithium Battery Company charging profile if you ask.
Can a LiFePO4 Battery be positioned on its side?
Yes, a LiFePO4 battery can be placed on its side. Its unique construction allows it to be placed on its side without compromising its performance or safety. The benefits of placing the battery on its side include saving space, allowing for easier maintenance, and providing enhanced air circulation. However, it is important to note that when placing the battery on its side, the electrolyte level must always remain above 50%. Additionally, the cell should not be placed in direct contact with any other object which could cause shorting or damage. It is also important to ensure that the connectors remain secure and free from dust or dirt.
